Harriet Ross Tubman
(c1820-1913),

Born into slavery, Harriet Tubman escaped at the age of 25, only to risk her life to help over 300 other slaves escape on the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. Nicknamed "Moses," she dedicated her life to the causes of abolition and Negro rights. At the outbreak of the Civil War, she served as a Union soldier, spy, and a nurse. Since her death, Tubman has received numerous honors, including the naming of the Liberty Ship Harriet Tubman, christened in 1944 by Eleanor Roosevelt.
