Harriet Ross Tubman
(c1820-1913),
Born into slavery, Harriet
Tubman escaped at the age
of 25, only to risk her life to
help over 300 other slaves
escape on the
UNDERGROUND
RAILROAD. Nicknamed
"Moses," she dedicated her
life to the causes of abolition
and Negro rights. At the
outbreak of the Civil War,
she served as a Union soldier,
spy, and a nurse. Since her
death, Tubman has received
numerous honors, including
the naming of the Liberty
Ship Harriet Tubman,
christened in 1944 by Eleanor
Roosevelt.
